Who We Are

Who are we???

We are members of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Members of the El Salvador Companion Synod Committee have worked to create and maintain this site.

As part of the Companion Synod Program of the ELCA, the Greater Milwaukee Synod has been in partnership with the Iglesia Luterana Salvadoreña since June, 1988.  Through the SHARE Foundation, the Greater Milwaukee Synod helped to sponsor a group of Salvadoran refugees who returned from Nicaragua and founded Comunidad Rutilio Grande in March, 1991.

What are we doing??

The Greater Milwaukee Synod is responding to the fall 2011 severe flooding in El Savlador with gifts for recovery, reconstruction and sustainaiblity of the Salvadoran Lutheran Church. Individual and congregational donations may be routed through the Greater Milwaukee Synod where they will be directed to Salvadoran Lutheran Church community recovery through efficient means, including an account which has been specifically set up by the ELCA for El Salvador Disaster Response. Individuals and congregations may also route their gifts directly through the ELCA account. Many businesses offer matching donations through ELCA Disaster Response (even if donations to your church are not matched). Please visit the Disaster Response Page on this site for reports and congregational resources.

are chapters in our story. We are strongly focused on building mutual relationships in which we learn from each other and grow in faith together. We focus on sustainability at all levels - in our relationships and in the church itself. The development projects which we support as sister churches and as a synod are created through visioning and planning together as teams of Salvadorans and North Americans together. We are currently focusing our energies as a synod in the following areas:

  • Growing the Salvadoran Lutheran Church Pastors Endowment Fund to a level which will serve as a source of a basic level of sustainable income for pastors in the Salvadoran Lutheran Church.

  • Working with the Salvadoran Lutheran Church and goverment health clinics to coordinate the Mission of Healing, which takes place each February and to provide support for ongoing empowerment classes and the training of health promotors. Information about the Mission of Healing 2012 is located on this page.

  • Working with Youth and Family ministry leaders of the Salvadoran Lutheran Church to coordinate annual training sessions for Sunday School and youth group leaders.

  • Working within the Greater Milwaukee Synod to host events such as La Fiesta, Accompaniment Training, Movie & Discussion Nights and Cross-Cultural Training events to better equip individuals and congregations for partnership ministries
